Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Studies show that minority students’ reading comprehension improves when reading culturally relevant books whose characters, places, and events align well with their own cultural and experiential backgrounds. Children from non-dominant cultural backgrounds have less opportunity to use their cultural knowledge and experiences if they are not adequately represented in texts used as part of the curriculum. I believe that our classroom library has to be a reflection of my students' background. Not only would this help them with comprehension but they would also be able to make more personal connections to the books as well as be more engaged in the reading.
