Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This May, in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I would like to expand my classroom library with books that specifically center the Asian experience. My current classroom library includes many books about kids with diverse identities, but Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are not equally represented across all genres. As recently as 2020, AAPI made up only 9% of protagonists in children's books published that year. Consequently, I have been scouring new middle-grade book releases to find exciting new titles for our growing collection.

In this collection of brand new titles by AAPI authors, students will be able to read a mystery about a kidnapped dog during a zombie apocalypse, a rom-com that takes place on Lunar New Year, and a graphic novel about siblings who save their family from mythical creatures!

As students who identify as AAPI make up a small percentage of our student population, students often enter middle school with misconceptions about Asians and Pacific Islanders. My hope is that by expanding my classroom library with these books, my AAPI students will build confidence in their own identities, and all students will build empathy and understanding by reading about cultures different from their own.
