This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My students live in a very rural area. They are amazing students with endless capabilities. They are eager to learn, and one of their favorite things to learn about is different cultures, countries, and especially celebrations from around the world. This year we have been lucky to have a new student who has come directly from China. We would love to celebrate him by helping our entire class learn about one of Asia's biggest celebrations.

By having access to objects that are specific to the Lunar New Year, such as books, items of food, and decorations, we can learn by immersing ourselves in what the celebration is about.

We will also use a photo printer to document the learning and celebrating and to create a culminating project to demonstrate our learning and present it to others.

We will also incorporate this learning into one of our reading units to help my first graders with their continued path towards fluency and comprehension,

I believe that learning through experience is powerful and a unique opportunity for student learning and engagement. This will also create a window into the lives of others for my students. They will experience a different culture and be exposed to others in a way that will deepen their understanding and appreciation for another race. Our new student also does not speak any English and is painfully shy, so I am also hoping by learning about this, we can help him open up and feel more comfortable in our classroom environment.
