Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What I love about our early childhood students is their enthusiasm for books, especially books that have illustrations about animals, vehicles, princesses, heroes, children, and even insects.
Although, their reading skills range from learning about alphabet letters and sounds to just starting to read and write short sentences, they all enjoy books with awesome pictures to show their friends which ones they enjoy the most.
This is a special project for our School's Library since we recently created an Early Childhood nook where our PreK-Kindergarten students can have a special place within our library that will provide them with easy access to a variety of books including Spanish and English books, board books, multicultural books, picture books and even books about social-emotional learning (e.g., making new friends, accepting friends that are different, self-esteem, so on and so forth).
These books will make a difference for our early childhood students during their library time so that time is well spent by being engaged with the books that they select, share them with their peers or even have the teacher read to them. We even placed an author's chair in our nook area for the purpose of inviting children's authors to our Library to introduce their books to our students.
The skills that our students will acquire during library time are endless, but most important of all is that they develop a true love for reading. This will have a positive impact towards their academic achievement in the area of reading as students transition to upper elementary, middle school, and thereafter high school.
