My Project

Our K-2 CES classroom is located at a Title I-funded elementary school. I work with a population that comes from low socioeconomic backgrounds. All of my students qualify for Title I-funding and receive special education services for non-verbal autistic students. My students work hard to overcome personal, social, and academic challenges every day! They are resilient and capable young people who deserve to be supported.

Students need a few minutes for movement breaks throughout the day, especially during the scheduled recess break.

Unfortunately, it is unsafe for some students to access outdoor equipment. I've found that giving students some time to get mentally prepared helps them feel settled. Because of this, their attention and ability to learn throughout the day improves! Some of the activities that they can do during these times, include board games, card games, hands-on toys like playdough, blocks, etc. However, these items don’t afford them opportunities to exercise and interact in physical movement activities. Please help our students have access to an indoor playground set and seesaw. This will afford them equal access to equipment that helps foster positive socialization skills as they share their love for the activity and also improve in their communication and motor skills. This equipment is also important for cold and wet days that require students to remain indoors.

Providing enough materials for students to play and explore during indoor recesses cuts down on poor behaviors and builds social learning skills.
