This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My classroom is a self-contained classroom within DCPS. During virtual instruction, independent learning centers moved from colorful workstations to take-home boxes and individualized files. Some students regularly engaged with the work, and some lost or broken items. When we returned to class, our items including sensory toys, storage bins, binders, and other items had to be replaced. These items do not fit within our yearly classroom allowance of $250 (a recent increase from $200).
My classroom lacks furniture, including shelves and other safe storage for learning materials.
Most of our learning center items are stored on the window ledge. This makes it difficult for students to retrieve their own center items after learning how to move through each learning opportunity. They have to wait for teachers to move materials out and around for them.
The goal of having these items is to design better learning centers with adequate and accessible storage for their learning materials for all 5 subjects (reading, math, writing, science, and social studies) and more opportunities to practice using and replacing classroom supplies (e.g., pencils, markers, dry erase boards, scratch paper, and others). Please make our learning process run better and promote our independent learning skills.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Ms. Douglas and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
