This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Over 90% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced price breakfast and lunch services. Many of them also receive their snacks and dinner through our after school program. We all know that when we are hungry -- we cannot learn. When we are hungry, we cannot focus. When we are hungry, we cannot self-regulate our emotions.
With our library pantry, we say "goodbye" to hangry students and hello to students who are hungry for learning.
We keep a supply of granola bars, breakfast bars, applesauce, and other snacks stocked in the library for students who need them. They can take snacks home with them or use their snacks during the day to supplement their meals as they need it. As word has spread, it's not just students who stop by throughout the day. Teachers and interventionists have come to us, requesting snacks for students who need them. This is one of the ways that we work to ensure all of our students are ready to learn at all times.
