I started teaching my class mid-year after their previous teacher had retired suddenly. When I took over, students were not just struggling academically, but convinced their teacher quit because of them. They lacked classroom community. Since then we have made huge strides. My students are creative, energetic, and bright. However, many students still struggle with major concepts, particularly plot structure and theme. To help bridge this gap, I have planned a unit where students read graphic novels and write their own.
Graphic novels are a valuable asset, enriching the learning experience by offering a diverse array of literary options.
By incorporating graphic novels into my curriculum, I can cater to a range of preferences and abilities within the classroom. Some students may be drawn to the visually captivating narratives, while others will benefit from easier comprehension. The variety of graphic novels I've selected are award-winning and accommodate different literacy levels & learning styles. Additionally, the Spanish versions of some of these books, as well as the dual-language graphic novel Invisible, will help my students who are still learning English. Furthermore, the interactive nature of this graphic novel unit promotes active engagement and critical thinking skills. Analyzing complex illustrations, interpreting visual cues, and navigating nonlinear storytelling formats in graphic novels encourage students to approach literature in dynamic and immersive ways. The collaborative aspect of sharing interpretations fosters a sense of community and enhances communication skills. Students will be able to craft their own stories and reach new levels of understanding.
By funding this project, you're investing in the futures of students who will benefit from the transformative power of graphic novels. Your support will provide them with the opportunity to explore new worlds, see themselves represented, learn different perspectives, and cultivate a lifelong love for reading.
