Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many students from my school go to an after-school program at the Eagle’s Nest. What a perfect place for my students to read books to other students! My students are so excited when they can read a book! Help my students get books that help them work on their articulation skills so that they can practice and then can read to other students and be successful at speaking and reading. These activities and skills help my students gain the skills they need and gain confidence in their speaking and reading abilities. These activities also demonstrate to the younger speech students that with practice they can do the same thing when they get older. Puppets and other hands on materials also help the younger students to retell the story.
The best way to increase confidence in students with speech issues is to practice books until they can read them successfully and then pair them up with other students who may or may not have speech/reading difficulties so that these students can also talk with an older student who has similar problems about their difficulties and how receiving help has made them a better speaker/reader.
Pattern books and hands on materials like puppets help the younger students to retell the story they have heard. This activity also allows students to learn after school after school in the community and encourages younger children to practice reading skills.
