Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

I teach theater in a low-income area. I love exposing my students to new things. We have been talking about different careers and a few students expressed wanting to become hair stylists and barbers. I aim to provide hands-on learning experiences by trying to expose my students to many real life experiences.

To achieve this goal, I would like to implement a six week workshop to teach my students what it takes to have a career in cosmetology.

I will have two professionals from the community come in to lead them in small hands-on projects. They will learn how to correctly drape a customer. They will learn the correct technique to washing and drying a customer's hair. They will see a demonstration of a stylist cutting and styling hair. They will also be taught how to do several styles of braids.

These girls will leave the workshop feeling confident in their new skills. My hope is that they will not stop here but their thirst for learning will give them a genuine desire to learn more about this profession.

We are seeking support for essential cosmetology products like hair styling tools, combs, brushes, scissors, drapes, aprons and mannequin heads. This is project 1/3. Please consider helping us get this project off of the ground. We will not be able to start this workshop without having the basic products for each student.
