My Project

Each May our local public library hosts a Children's Festival of Reading. Authors and illustrators make in person visits, give talks, and sign books for the community. In order to encourage readers we want to read and share books by this year's guests. Students that are familiar with the authors are more likely to attend and be engaged with the festival. This event also kicks off the public library's summer reading program.

Students will be able to read and enjoy books written by diverse authors and illustrators and then meet them in person.

Growing readers requires interest and engagement. Alan Gratz historical fiction writer and author of "Refugee" featuring diverse experiences, shifting narration, and moving through time will be there. A recent Volunteer State Award book nominee Deb Pilutti author of "Old Rock is not Boring" will attend. Cozbi Cabrera author of "Me & Mama" and "Exquisite - the Poetry and Life of Gwendolyn Brooks" writes stories with Afro-Hispanic and African-American characters which open my students to other lives. Two author illustrators will also be there: Ashlynn Anstee and Gale Galligan. It will be a great opportunity for our students to engage in person. Having the books ahead of time will be a Big help to intriguing our students into attending the festival and possibly reading through the summer.

This project also includes dry erase pouches. Students will write a script for a book talk about these author's books. They can then erase at the end of class. In the past nearly all students tossed the worksheet after the book talk lesson. We are in need of a pencil sharpener for student use as colored pencils dull quickly. Directed drawings led by these illustrators can now permit students to manage materials at point of need.
