My Project

Emerging readers need many opportunities to practice applying their newly acquired phonics skills to reading text. I would use these book sets during small group instruction so that each child could have a book at their level to practice their reading skills. When they can read real books on their own they feel successful and confident!

These books would benefit all three second grade classes at my school since we do “walk to read.” This means that the lowest readers come to my classroom each day for a half hour of instruction targeted to their level.

Many of these students are English language learners or students for whom second grade is their first year coming to school. Currently, I have to hunt down and make copies of stories that are appropriate for each of the small groups in my class. These book sets would save me time and provide students with the feeling of reading a real book, not just a paper copy.

Students in my school often have many things working against them: poverty, trauma, language barriers. Let’s not let a lack of resources be another barrier to their learning! Please help me provide interesting decodable texts to give them a solid start in reading.
