Help me give my students Spanish books to allow them to be active participants in their regular education classes and also reflect in their home language.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When children first come to school, they come with a lot of knowledge from home. Sometimes that is coming to school only speaking their home language. Our students' diversity is very important to us. We love celebrating each other and our differences. Our classroom and school library is slowly growing our collection of Spanish books. I want to bring books into the library that represent their home language and culture. Many of our parents are eager to read with their children, but are unable to because of the availability of books in Spanish.
When building a classroom library, you always want to make sure that the children can relate to the books.
My goal is to provide my students with books that they can read in their home language. Many of my newcomer students struggle with reading in their homeroom because they are given a book in English and are expected to know what is happening in the story. Giving them a copy of "Un pez, dos pez, pez rojo, pez azul”, "Horton escucha a quien", or other books in Spanish will allow them to be more successful in completing assignments that go with the book. My students have been requesting more Dr. Seuss books in Spanish. They love the silliness of his books and all the rhymes. I hope to instill the love of reading by providing them with these books.
