My students are a wonderful group of six students with autism between the ages of 5-7. My students are all very sweet and eager to learn! The students in my class are amazing! The majority of my students come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, and are also non-verbal. We work hard on facilitating communication skills through modeling, as well as through the use of picture symbols and communication devices. In addition, my students strive to improve their academic skills. They love reading, math, science, social studies, social/emotional learning, art, health, music, and movement. Having a well-rounded education is so important! Children with autism often struggle with receptive language which is why visuals, routines and structure are very important. Having a well-designed classroom with visual schedules and clearly defined areas helps to increase my students' independence!
Students with autism need basic items to help them maintain structure and routine throughout their school day.
Notebooks and zipper pouches would help my students organize their classwork and keep a structured schedule. The notebooks would be used for my students to practice pre-writing and writing skills. Each student would have their own notebook to use in the classroom. They would store this notebook in the book pocket behind their chair, where they keep all their belongings.
The zipper pouches would be used to help my students organize their materials. They would use one color zipper pouch for their school supplies such as glue sticks, glue bottles, crayons, rulers, etc. My students would use a different colored pouch to hold their library book so they can keep it stored safely behind their chair for the next time they are able to continue reading the book.
These basic items would help my students with autism maintain their routine in a structured environment.
