This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At my school students come from very diverse backgrounds and this year is no different. The majority of my students this year are new immigrants and are making great progress and learning to navigate their way in an English-speaking classroom.
I am excited to see what paths these young students will choose for themselves and learning to read is the first step in that journey.
Students will have fun learning the alphabet beginning with the materials that will have them matching uppercase to lowercase letters as well as placing them in alphabetical order. Next students will be able to create fully decodable CVC words to practice saying and spelling beginning, middle and end sounds and letters. Finally, they can practice reading CVC words while playing a game with their friends.
Please help us bridge the gap in language acquisition for our predominantly Spanish speaking students who are learning to speak, read and write in English. Our school community is located in a high-poverty area and the school is a haven for students at our school. I am so proud of the effort the students make every day despite everything that they have experienced in their young lives. Engagement and focus are keywords in our changing learning environment.
