Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have been a school social worker for 6 years. I am a mom of two boys (4 and 2 years old). When we go out to eat or to other events, I never give them my phone to watch a show or play games. Instead I will give them a Wow Water!, drawing pads, coloring books, play "I Spy," etc to help them engagement with something else while we are waiting. We can afford to buy those extra items and I am aware of the negative effects of excessive screen time and the positive effects of eating together without screens. I want to make activity kits to give our families with young children and include informational handouts in English and Spanish that can provide educational information about screen time and positive information about bonding with children and the items to use instead and other games they can play like "I Spy," etc. The book about manners and waiting will help develop SEL skills.

The longer term goal of this project would then have opportunities to continue to engagement parents in conversations about screen time and safe technology usage.

I hope through this project when children come to KG they will be able to be more engaged, have better attention spans, less anxiety, increases SEL skills, and be more academically prepared for school. I love the building I work in and the students I work with. I work in a Title I building that is about 85% Hispanic and about 96% free/reduced lunch. I think our students are kind to other students no matter what they wear or how they look. Our students are very accepting of others' differences and I love that about them.
