My Project

As a current special education teacher who mainly works with Autistic students, I find Autism Acceptance Month each April to be quite a big deal. As a former primary teacher, I understand the power of using picture books to broach trickier topics and teach new information in a way that is relatable and memorable for students; this is why I've used picture books to go into classrooms and read about autism during April for the past few years.

As Autism Acceptance Month approaches, I've been thinking a lot about what it would look like if Autism Acceptance Month could be more than a single lesson for the students at our school- what if teachers had the resources to read and talk about autism all month long?

What if this April, our students could be immersed in examples of what it means to be autistic, and what it means to be a good friend to a person with autism?

This is my hope with this Donors Choose Project. I would like to create my own Autism Lending Library. I have several picture books already. If donors would sponsor this project, it would mean I could load my bookshelf with these books and set it outside my classroom door, where teachers could grab a read-aloud and give their class another opportunity to grow their understanding of autism.

My students are already so well-received by their peers in their amazing classroom communities, but who knows? What starts as an awareness project in April could grow into a much wider understanding and acceptance of the ways that being different makes each person unique.
