Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our new literacy curriculum helps students learn about science topics through text. Our next unit, which begins this spring, focuses on plants. Most of my students live in housing that doesn't give them the opportunity to garden. Though they see plants in the community and will see them in our unit's books, they don't have experience growing their own plants.
Students learn best by doing - these gardening supplies will allow my students to explore the science of plants in a hands-on way.
Students will be able to observe the differences between seeds, predict the best growing conditions, learn what plants need to survive, and experience the joy of growing something from a tiny seed!
Additionally, for my students who are learning English, having the real tools available will help them learn the vocabulary and understand the content in a more meaningful way. All students will be able to make real-life connections to the books they are reading, increasing their comprehension of the topics.
