This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
In Fall 2019, I taught organic chemistry for the first time at our early college high school, and I'm hoping to bring it back in Fall 2024. Bringing a college-level organic chemistry lab class into a high school poses challenges because we have traditional classrooms rather than state-of-the-art organic chemistry laboratories, but fortunately, there are plenty of safe and engaging lab activities that help get our students as close to this experience as possible.
From soap and aspirin syntheses to chromatography and caffeine extraction from tea, students are able to explore many different facets of organic chemistry in the high school setting.
These lab activities additionally require some supplies that do not come in the lab kits and are in short supply at our school as the size of our student population increases. With our budget stretched thin recently, we are doing our best to access outside resources to make these laboratory activities possible, which is why I've decided to turn to DonorsChoose again in the hopes that potential contributors may see value in this goal.
