My Project

My K-2 school has completely changed its curriculum in 2 years. We are focusing on the science of reading and using research based instruction. The change has been great for kids! However with this focus we have struggled to keep presenting important and interesting science topics. I would like to bring more science into my classroom with decodable nonfiction science books that I can use during reading instruction for small groups of children. This will increase their content knowledge. Research has shown content knowledge is important for reading instruction. I have found in my 30 years of teaching that students LOVE reading non fiction books. Unfortunately at the kindergarten level non fiction books are often too challenging for them to read on their own. We read our science books as "read alouds" I would like to give them the opportunity to practice their new reading skills AND explore science topics. The books I have selected will do both. I want to connect reading instruction and science knowledge. Thank you!
