My Project

In fifth grade, one of our units in our reading program focuses on natural disasters and connects with our science units of biodiversity/habitat studies. We have been trying to connect our literacy units with science and social studies to create a more integrated experience. Furthermore, we noticed students weren't getting enough science, as that is often the first thing cut out of the day, with the focus being on math, reading and writing scores. My goal is to tie in our science and social studies units as much as we can into our literacy units, and that is where these books come in.

If these books get purchased, students will have a combination of non-fiction and fiction books to choose from.

They will have independent reading sources, while also having novel studies that relate around the topic of natural diasters. Many of these students have never left their state, let alone New England. We know what snow looks like, but many have never experienced other types of natural disasters or know what causes them and the effect of such storms. Our unit will focus not only on what causes these storms, but also will focus on preventions/ preparation. My students will not always be in Maine forever, so being prepared is very important. Furthermore, as beginning scientists, they are going to study what countries do to prepare, including how they build houses and buildings to withstand the natural disasters that are common. Students need to be prepared for the world around them in all facets.
