My Project

At our school, we have an increasing amount of MLLs (mulit-lingual learners) especially those who are new to the country. We have noticed that these students need an increasing amount of visuals to help make sense of the world around them. Some of our students have never spoken English before starting school and are working so hard on making connections with their peers and the world around them.

We want to help them.

That's the job of a teacher. Especially a kindergarten one. We project pictures in the classroom and sometimes even draw them to help solidify a vocabulary word or concept. Our native English speakers also benefit from labeled pictures in our classroom. A printer in the classroom would allow us to quickly choose, print and display pictures about the things we are learning.

We are an IB school! With this comes a lot of inquiry and wonders from the students. We give student the agency to choose topics they would like to learn more about, and this makes planning for pictures difficult. For example, we do an incredible ecosystem unit in which we discuss different plants and animals that co-exist in different parts of the world. Last year one student gave the wonder "do dolphins live in non salty water?" This lead us on a research quest and there are in fact pink river dolphins! Children's minds are full of wonders and we aim to help support their curiosity in every way we can. A good way to solidify that knowledge is through pictures.
