My Project

As a teacher of over 30 years, I have taught a lot of math and have used a lot of different strategies to teach the different skills. Something that works fabulously is using manipulatives to introduce the skills! Students are able to explore and discover how numbers work and figure out patterns in math. After some deep searching, I found some manipulatives that would be excellent for many skills throughout the year. They are called Math Stackers. The idea of these Math Stackers is that students can see the connection between numbers in many areas such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, factors, multiples, and even fractions! As The Math Thinker site says, “They are a way to captivate and encourage all students to wonder and think about “Why does math work?”” Math Stackers offer large sets to be used for whole group lessons, medium sized magnetized sets for small group instruction, as well as smaller magnetized sets for students. These different sets would provide opportunities for various groups working at the same time!

By using Math Stackers in my classroom, I believe there will be a deeper understanding of the basic math concepts, and they will be able to focus on more advanced leveled skills because the basics will be solidified.

The 54 students in 4th grade math that I work with love it when the math isn’t just paper/pencil or lectures. They want to figure out the “why” of how things work! They have a thirst for learning new things and for knowing if things work every time. I believe these Math Stackers will be a key to making this happen!
