This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Students in 5th and 6th grade are going through a major transitional period in their personal, social, and academic lives. It is normal for students in this pre-teen age to struggle with regulating their emotions, impulse control, and understanding boundaries, so it is important to provide them a lot of support, structure and guidance.

One way to support students is to provide a calming corner in the classroom where they can spend some time regulating their emotions before rejoining the rest of the class.

This can be extremely useful for students who are having a rough day. Maybe they got in an argument with a friend on the bus, or didn't do as well on a test as they thought they did, or they spilled their bag of chips during lunch. Even small things can have a big impact on students' emotions and ability to stay focused and engaged during class. Sometimes this can lead to escalated conflicts, such as arguing or fighting in class. We all know what it's like to have that one little thing push us over the edge of frustration. Sometimes, just stepping away for a moment and taking time to breathe and re-center ourselves is all we need to get back on track; this is no different for our pre-teen students! A calming corner is one great way to give students the opportunity to do this.

The materials in this project will enhance the calming corner I already have in my classroom, which right now is just a desk and chair next to our small - yet slowly growing - classroom library. My goal is to make this corner a comforting space for students to express and regulate their big emotions in healthy and safe ways.
