My Project

Our campus is a non-traditional Connecticut high school that specializes in creating personalized curricula and learning environments for students with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, depression, anxiety, and traumas.

The Raspberry Pi single board computers will help these students in a variety of ways including teaching them to program, improving their literacy and concrete-sequential cognitive skills, and emotional regulation.

Learning to program is quickly becoming an essential skill in nearly every professional job field. By having access to personalized computers that can access physical computing components, these students will be able to design, create, and realize these projects individually or in groups. This will provide concrete skills needed for many jobs, appreciation for the technology around them, and awareness of the complex interactions occurring between the myriad systems surrounding them.

Programming also provides one of the best ways of developing clear, linear thinking and writing skills. There are few other opportunities to see such a clear relationship between what one creates and whether or not the intended outcome is successful. Being able to problem solve and iterate these processes will transfer to a variety of other environments and tasks.

Lastly, many of these students struggle with emotional regulation. By pursuing a project that is personally interesting and relevant to these students will help motivate them to develop "grit" and perseverance while developing these projects. While often frustrating, programming - and seeing one's ideas come to fruition - can be very rewarding. This will reinforce the value of persevering and troubleshooting a variety of problems - other skills highly transferable to a variety of environments and situations.

These tools will be used to help many students learn teamwork, perseverance, problem-solving, and programming.
