My Project

Thanks to generosity from the Donorschoose community, we started a Pre-K Polo program at a Title I school. Pre-K Polo involves children riding roller scooters in a pitch marked out by training cones while using foam bats to attempt to knock a large yoga ball into their team's goal. Per Donorschoose's recommendation, we only asked for the minimum required to launch the program in order to keep our ask below $500. That was just enough to purchase the scooters, ball, bats, training cones and a couple of helmets. It was not enough to help us make things easier for students with significant physical or cognitive struggles.

Half of our kids have significant problems with physical play due to motor and/or cognitive issues.

This project seeks to improve their safety and enjoyment during matches by mitigating these issues. This will in turn allows them to participate fully, increasing their inclusivity with the other half of the class.

To address safety, we will be replacing worn out bicycle helmets with new rally helmets that offer increased face protection. Our project also includes enough sets of wrist, elbow and knee pads to outfit two teams. Obtaining two referee jerseys and whistles will allow us to provide students with visual and audio cues to stop play when a safety issue arises.

To increase the ease of play for cognitively-challenged students, we are color-coding players and goals with bright, primary colors. Using practice jerseys in team colors while also color-matching the safety gear will allow our students to readily identify who is on their team, and a color-matched goal makes it obvious which direction their team should take the ball.
