My Project

The proposed project is an end of the year STEM vehicle building activity for the science students on a special education co-taught cluster in the 7th grade. We end our 7th grade curriculum with units on energy, electricity and magnetism and these kits have elements from all these units. Each student would receive a vehicle of their choosing from the kit box, two batteries, and sharpies to help design their vehicle. Once the vehicle is designed and built, students have to give a written description of their vehicle using terms from their previously learned units and how energy is transferred to make their vehicles begin and end motion.

This project would be especially meaningful for these students this year as the majority of them are from low socioeconomic status homes and receive free lunch.

Many, when assigned hands-on projects to complete, either do not complete them or only complete them if their teachers provide them with the materials. It also would provide them with a positive incentive at the end of the year, which can be a difficult time for student engagement. An added bonus is each student would get to bring their completed vehicle home!

The intended purpose of the proposed project covers three of the following standards of the Massachusetts Science frameworks:

Electricity and Magnetism: 7.MS-PS2-5. Use scientific evidence to argue that fields exist between objects with mass, between magnetic objects, and between electrically charged objects that exert force on each other even though the objects are not in contact.

Energy Transfer: 7.MS-PS3-7(MA). Use informational text to describe the relationship between kinetic and potential energy and illustrate conversions from one form to another.

Engineering: 7.MS-ETS3-5(MA). Use the concept of systems engineering to model inputs, processes, outputs, and feedback among components of a transportation, structural, or communication system.
