This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
The students have the opportunity to participate in the community Garden project. We can host up to twenty students with this opportunity. The gardening club consists of 4th and 5th-grade students who vary in ability, skills, and gender. This club allows students who have no experience with gardening to have hands-on experience with the life cycle of plants. The knowledge that they get from this experience is transferable in many ways.
First, we are educating the students about the environment.
How plants grow and change, and where their food comes from. As an inner-city school our students cannot relate to the farm-to-table experience. They come with many questions about the plants that are in the garden.
Secondly, the garden belongs to the community. This is an opportunity for students to invest in their community. Often the students receive from the community, but this is their opportunity to give back in a meaningful way. The local church contributes to the gardening efforts by providing gloves and gardening tools for students to use. Also, this gardening project promotes healthy eating. Students learn the benefits of fresh organic foods. They grow the plants from seeds to adult plants and then harvest the crop for their families' kitchens.
There are many benefits to this garden program that but we need a few items that would help students in their exploration. They need garden boots. None of the students have gardening boots. often the garden is muddy and students have to tramp through the mud leaving their shoes a total mess. Some students wear sandals which can lead to accidents or being bitten by insects. This is a safety concern. This request is for protective boots for students and other garden supplies and equipment.
