Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My hard-working group of students are ages 18-22 and remain in school to develop vocational and independent living skills before transitioning into adulthood. Students in my class are developing life skills across many areas, one of which is health and wellness. This includes social-emotional and mental health, as well as physical health. Throughout the year, students learn about medical safety, food and nutrition, fitness, etc.

An active lifestyle is important for these young adults with disabilities, and we encourage students to be active throughout the entire school year.

In the fall and spring we utilize our high school track to walk laps, and participate in community outings to local and state parks to walk, hike, play sports, etc. In the winter months, we may go to the local mall before opening hours to walk laps, or work on basic exercise routines in our classroom.

In order to keep our bodies moving, we are in need of some supplies! With pedometers, students will be able to keep track of their individual steps and hopefully increase their motivation as they partake in our annual walking challenge. In addition to step counters, having our own sports equipment would allow more team activities to take place during our community outings.

By enhancing our fitness routines and movement activities, students will benefit both physically and mentally.
